The Rare Shoebills of Uganda

A short drive from the Semliki Lodge in Western Uganda we transferred to a large canoe with a small in engine to go off in search on the of the elusive Shoe Bill stork and its foot long bill closely resembling a dutch clog.

Five foot tall with large glassy yellow eyes that blink almost in slow motion, they hide in the reeds and lilies of the lake; they are surprisingly difficult to find.

With their population decreasing with only 3000-5000 birds left in the world our sense of urgency and excitement in finding one of these extraordinary birds was not to be underestimated.

They can stay motionless for hours and then lunge using a “collapsing” technique to envelope and lunge at their prey. They are a rare and special find.
